League tables - love them or hate them, they're here to stay
Article Abstract:
There are indications that league tables are beginning to gain wider acceptance within higher education circles in the UK. Indeed, the vice chancellors' committee is now encouraging more publishers to produce university league tables. This committee is particularly keen to see league tables that take a range of aspects of university life into account. At present, potential students tend not to select universities on the basis of the quality of a particular course. However, this may change with the implementation of tuition fees, as more emphasis will be placed on value for money.

A taste of economics on a Saturday morning
Article Abstract:
The London School of Economics (LSE) is running a Saturday morning study course aimed at sixth-form pupils in state schools in three boroughs of London, England, which have low rates of university entrance. The main purpose of the course is to boost the performance of those who are predicted to obtain only average or below-average A-level grades, thus giving them a better chance of going to university. The LSE itself is keen to attract more students from state schools.

Academics on the verge of a nervous breakdown
Article Abstract:
There is now very great pressure on academics at universities and colleges in the UK. Their work is monitored very closely, and they have to spend a lot of time on administrative tasks. Many feel stressed, and it has become common for academics to suffer from stress-related conditions, including stomach ulcers, high blood pressure and virus infections. They also find that their work interferes a great deal with their personal lives.
