Let the Royals join the queue for 'Britannia II.' (mixed views on plans for new royal yacht)(Column)
Article Abstract:
Plans by the UK government to fund a new royal yacht from public money have attracted considerable controversy. Some observers feel that the yacht is a waste of valuable resources which could be used more effectively elsewhere. It does not seem to be used to maximum advantage, with its full potential as an entertainment centre not really being realised. A future Labour government would have to justify investment in a new royal yacht by making it pay for itself. This would involve ensuring that the public sector retains firm control over it, giving ordinary people a sense of ownership.

A warm welcome to Britain for all these clever people
Article Abstract:
Media coverage of immigration gives very little attention to the fact that the UK is attracting large numbers of highly skilled foreigners. The UK lost many talented people in the 1960s and 1970s, but is now attracting such people again. The way these economic migrants is treated has more significance for the state of the economy than the way political migrants are treated. Economic migrants seem to be divided into two main groups: those who come to the UK for career and financial reasons and those who are seeking entry-level employment.

When cool Britannia meets hard-headed economics
Article Abstract:
There is a growing trend among young continental European professionals to seek employment in the UK. This is partly because suitable employment is more readily available in the UK than in continental Europe and because of the liberalization of the European Union labour market. However, another key factor in this trend is that economic growth in the UK has given a significant boost to the country's cultural scene. This trend will not be permanent, but it is benefiting the UK at present.
