Major confirms French rejection would kill off Maastricht
Article Abstract:
European governments are worried about loss of national identity. The UK was most concerned about economic and monetary union but it was hardly an issue in other countries. Some states seek a common defence but others believe it already exists in Nato. The Maastrict treaty prevents the Community taking action better done at state level and permits members to act together without necessarily acting within the framework of community law.

I'm going to fight them in the streets
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party believes strongly in protecting the interests of ordinary, law-abiding people, according to prime minister John Major. It is vital to give people the opportunity to make progress, and to ensure that they have a real stake in the country. Choice should be the driving force behind policy, especially in areas such as education, where the government should ensure that parents' wishes are taken into account.
