Makers of their own tragedy
Article Abstract:
It is important to look again a traditional views about how the Russian revolution happened and what its significance was, according to Orlando Figes, who spent many years researching an extremely influential book on the subject. In a radical shift away from conventional thinking, he shows the Russian people themselves as the main players in their own tragedy. However, he is keen to emphasise that this not an indication of anti-Russian bigotry. His main concern is to come to terms with violence, which was at the centre of the revolution.

Hanley's trap could be fatal for the Tories
Article Abstract:
Conservative party chairman Jeremy Hanley has stated that he believes that it would be a good idea to promise a rolling programme of tax cuts, to run for three years and cover the period of the next general election. In his opinion, this would show the government's firm commitment to this policy. However, such a policy would be more likely to bring about the downfall of the government, as it goes against prime minister John Major's determination to not be tempted by economic policies which bring short-term political advantage.

Privacy, the press and happy hypocrites
Article Abstract:
Nearly everyone enjoys reading about the private lives of others, and this really does little harm if coverage remains on a general level. However, it is important to find a balance between lighthearted reporting about individuals and excessive and damaging prying into very sensitive issues. It is very hard to decide who should be responsible for making such a decision.
