Managing the economy is about moral issues too
Article Abstract:
Economists generally try to avoid dealing with issues which involve making value judgements. However, there are times when economics and morality are inextricably linked. This is the case in the UK, where economic prosperity is being negatively affected by crime, inequality and pollution. There is now a growing belief that there are serious problems with the UK economy, with most people accepting that there is more to life than simply having money. Politicians are generally very unwilling to deal with moral issues.

Glimpse of victory in the war on boom and bust
Article Abstract:
There are indications that the UK government is beginning to be successful with its policy of achieving low inflation with stable growth and interest rates. Reforms of monetary policy have ensured that inflation on the target measure has been within 1% of its 2.5% target, and gross domestic product and consumer spending have become more stable. However, exporters would still like to see a stable, and preferably considerably lower, exchange rate.

House prices are starting to overheat but economy has a new thermostat
Article Abstract:
Economists are starting to become concerned about the UK housing market. House prices have risen rapidly, and this has prompted mortgage equity withdrawal. There is no evidence that the emerging housing boom will slow naturally, as unemployment continues to fall and average earnings growth is accelerating. However, there will not be a repeat of the housing boom of the late 1980s, as the Bank of England is now in control of interest rates.
