Mandela may have gone, but South Africa is still a land of hope
Article Abstract:
The end of apartheid in South Africa represented a victry for humanity. The elections of 1994 were seen as a liberation, while elections in 1999 involve Thabo Mbkei, successor of Nelson Mandela, and represent a move to the practical. Charisma is less important in 1999. The country faces high unemployment and crime levels, and a housing shortage. There is a risk that the African National Congress could become too arrogant, and men have been promoted into posts where they hold no special talent. Mbeki can bring in new men.
