Ministers brassed off in the battle for the future of new Labour
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is facing many challenges as it seeks to govern as New Labour. Each of these is testing the loyalty of the party's traditional supporters. Recent areas of conflict have included the future of the coal industry and the setting of a minimum wage. Both of these issues have shed valuable light on the character of the administration being run by Prime Minister Tony Blair. The conflict over the minimum wage shows that the increasingly widely-held view of Chancellor Gordon Brown as a true socialist permanently opposed to the neo-conservative Blair is not necessarily correct.

The left that's left in New Labour
Article Abstract:
Some people within the UK Labour party fear that it is failing to adopt policies which would distinguish it clearly from a Conservative government if it were to win the forthcoming general election. This contrasts strongly with the views of party leader Tony Blair, who is convinced that a Labour government would be radical, especially if it could secure two terms. A recent analysis by economist Richard Layard indicates that the new-style Labour party has not abandoned equality or the role of the state.
