Miracles will happen
Article Abstract:
Black musicians can find it hard to break away from conventional stereotypes, according to pianist and composer Paul Gladstone Reid. He first came to public attention as a jazz pianist at the age of only 17, but found that recording executives were not prepared to allow him to follow his own instincts and interests. He abandoned the idea of pursuing a career as a pianist, and has recently turned to composing. He is soon to see the premiere of his opera, 'Miracles,' which is part of an inner-city music and dance programme.

Heading on down that country road
Article Abstract:
Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell finds it hard to understand why some people have been critical of his new album, 'Nashville,' which has strong country music overtones. He has admired certain elements of country music for many years, and does not feel that he has abandoned his jazz connections. The album was recorded on a very informal basis, and the musicians involved were given a considerable amount of creative freedom. His latest project is an album with rock drummer Jim Keltner.

In pursuit of the perfect moment
Article Abstract:
Jazz pianist Jason Rebello attributes his gradual disillusionment with music to his very early success. He stopped performing for a short time, and even spent some time at a Buddhist monastery. He has now returned to performing, but still goes regularly to the monastery to meditate. He has become interested in composition again, and could be embarking on a career in classical music. He was attracted to Buddhism because it is extremely logical.
