Mourning never ceases for the land they lost
Article Abstract:
The Palestinians who fled to Lebanon in 1948 still cling to the past, with streets in Lebanon's 12 refugee camps being named after those left behind and now buried under Israeli settlements. They and their descendents are unable to work or hold residence cards in Lebanon, and have no automatic right to return if they leave. Refugee schools and hospitals are deteriorating, but the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which is very short of funds, can do little to halt this trend.

Dutch courage is a disgrace to the United Nations
Article Abstract:
Dutch troops working under the auspices of the United Nations failed to protect the residents of the east Bosnian town of Srebrenica from attack by Serb forces in 1995. The peacekeepers were hailed as heroes when they returned to the Netherlands, when in fact they had focused on protecting themselves, rather than the people of Srebrenica. Their actions are detailed in a new book which relates the collapse and subsequent massacre at Srebrenica.

Optimist at work in shadow of chaos
Article Abstract:
Mourad Benashenhou, Algeria's economic minister, is working on liberalising the country's collapsed socialist economy. Algeria currently has a total debt of $27 billion and 25% unemployment, and the civil war has led to the destruction of many factories, railways and communications links. Benashenhou is now trying to attract foreign investment, emphasising that the country deserves international help.
