'Whingeing Poms' can sway election
Article Abstract:
Pauline Hanson's populist One Nation party has attracted considerable support from British immigrants in Australia. This has been seen in places including the Brand constituency on the country's west coast. Here, British immigrant Lee Dawson is standing as One Nation's candidate against Kim Beazley, leader of the opposition Labor Party. One Nation is benefiting from the fact that local people feel neglected by both the ruling conservatives of the Liberal-National coalition and the Labor opposition.

Australia pays silent tribute to gun victims
Article Abstract:
The recent massacre of 35 people at Port Arthur, Tasmania, has greatly shocked the whole of Australia. In the local community, it is not generally normal to express strong emotions, but this incident has provoked public displays of grief. The gunman was known to local people, many of whom had already felt that his behaviour and attitudes were rather strange. He is now under police guard at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
