Music looks back to the future
Article Abstract:
The International Society for Contemporary Music, founded by composers at a contemporary chamber music festival in 1922, sought to spread its influence by holding Music Days in a different city each year. The organization had a rather eclectic approach, but this actually benefited some composers, especially the very young Benjamin Britten. His international reputation was largely established by the inclusion in the Florence festival of 1934 of his Phantasy, Op 2, and the inclusion in the Barcelona festival of 1936 of his Suite for violin and piano. The 1998 festival in Manchester, England, will include the first consecutive hearing of Symphonia by Elliott Carter.

The double life of Charles Ives
Article Abstract:
Recent publications have tried to shed new light on the influence of US composer Charles Ives. Doubt has been expressed about the extent to which he really did pre-empt the European modernists in the use of techniques such as tone-clusters. There is certainly now evidence that he introduced modernist elements into early works when he came to revise them. He undoubtedly had real gifts and great originality, but may not have been so influential if he had been working in Europe.

They've never had it so good
Article Abstract:
The Society for the Promotion of New Music celebrates its 50th anniversary with a South Bank concert featuring four novelties. The Royal Academy of Music has a competition for composers under 20. Elisabeth Lutyens told students in 1960 to give up composing unless they felt they could not stop. Nicholas Maw's 'Scenes and Arias,' composed for the 1962 Proms, was considered post-modernistic in the 1970s. Chants and repetition are used in the interests of accessibility in 1993.
