Nowadays the fats really do add up
Article Abstract:
Obesity is becoming an increasingly common problem in the UK. where a fifth of men and women are now clinically obese. A new report from the British Nutrition Foundation gives a valuable insight into the reasons for this trend. One of the key causes of obesity is the fact that the population as a whole has become increasingly inactive. There is also evidence indicating that obesity levels are genetically inherited. The report suggests that anti-obesity drugs may be helpful, as they can make lifestyle changes easier to achieve.

Do we choose to be good?
Article Abstract:
Biologists are increasingly drawing the debate about free will away from philosophers and theologians. Consideration is now being given to the possibility that people's biological make-up restricts their ability to make choices. People may believe that they are making choices, but in reality they may not be able to behave otherwise than they do. Some observers believe that the world is mechanistic and can be predetermined to a certain extent.

TB or not TB? That is the question
Article Abstract:
The UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food plans to cull between 12,000 and 20,000 badgers as part of a research initiative designed to eliminate bovine tuberculosis (TB). This scheme has attracted considerable controversy, with some observers disputing claims that badgers spread bovine TB.
