OFT grills banks on excluded customers
Article Abstract:
The UK Office of Fair Trading is investigating whether high street banks meet the needs of vulnerable consumers, such as the homeless. It believes that 20% of the population do not have a bank account, and points out that many bank branches have been closed since the mid-1980s. The investigation is being interpreted by some observers as part of the government's wider programme of tackling social exclusion. The British Banking Association disputes the view that 20% of the population do not have a bank account.

Counting the benefits of a new currency
Article Abstract:
Greece is determined to meet the criteria for European economic and monetary union (EMU) membership by 2001. Bank of Greece Governor Lucas Papademos believes that EMU membership will consolidate the progress towards reducing inflation in Greece, as well as bringing benefits as a result of the elimination of uncertainty linked with transactions in different currencies. State banking is being privatized, and many mergers are taking place in the banking industry.
