On the road to nowhere
Article Abstract:
There continues to be strong interest in the Beats, and this is likely to strengthen further in 1999, the 30th anniversary of the death of Jack Kerouac, who introduced the concept of the Beat Generation. Kerouac's 'On the Road,' the key text of the Beats, has become detached from its origins in modern jazz and the repression of the US in the 1940s, and is now regarded as a portrayal of youth rebellion for its own sake. The continued power of this novel is closely associated with the fact that people generally read it at an age when they are just entering adulthood.

Half ice-dancing, half wildlife film
Article Abstract:
Gaelic football remains very parochial in Ireland, with clubs being defined by parish boundaries and teams made up of local people. The game has complicated rules, but manages to be both fascinating and beautiful. The referee must ensure that the game does not descend into chaos, but must also take care not to interfere with its natural form. The game itself can be very violent, but violence among supporters is rare.
