On the wards of despair
Article Abstract:
Children in Iraqi hospitals must endure extremely harsh conditions. The seven-year embargo on Iraqi, authorized by the United Nations Sanctions Committee, has produced a very serious shortage of medicines, especially those used to treat cancer. There has been a sharp rise in cases of childhood cancer, which may experts believe is the result of the depleted uranium weapons used mainly by the US and UK forces during the Gulf War, but drugs are now being reserved for children who have a good chance of recovering. Families are selling all their possessions and even their homes to raise money for essential drugs.

Coded diary reveals Japanese prison's death and despair
Article Abstract:
Professor Philip Aston of Surrey University, England, has succeeded in unlocking the code which was used by RAF squadron leader Donald Hill in the diary he kept when he was a prisoner of the Japanese during the second world war. The diary records events including Hill's capture and incarceration at the Sham Shui Po Camp, where he suffered brutality, starvation and despair. His story has attracted considerable interest, and may become the subject of a film.
