One year on: spot the difference
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly clear during the first year of Chinese sovereignty in Hong Kong that China has been keen to preserve the colonial form of rule as it develops a new system for Hong Kong. The new regime has revived some of the worst colonial practices, with Tung Chee-hwa running the government in an autocratic manner. It is clear that he is being closely monitored by Chinese leaders, but nobody really knows exactly how he relates to them. There is a high level of dissatisfaction with the government, which is very unusual in a post-colonial situation.

Long-suffering Patten is praised at the death
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten has been praised by Tsang Yok-shing, the leader of the largest pro-Chinese political party in Hong Kong. Tsang expressed the view that British rule in Hong Kong led to an extremely efficient and relatively uncorrupt civil service, and stated that significant achievements had been made in areas such as education and housing. He feels that Patten has improved openness and accountability in the civil service. However, he also believes that Patten is partly responsible for some of the problems which Hong Kong has faced recently.
