Opening chapter
Article Abstract:
The design for the new British Library in London, England, places strong emphasis on the synthesis of art and architecture. The building, designed by Professor Colin St John Wilson, features interior fittings of extremely high quality, and will also have a range of specially commissioned works of art. St John Wilson regards these as an intrinsic part of the building, which is to open in Nov 1997. Three artworks he commissioned have already been installed, but there are currently insufficient funds to install a sculpture commissioned from Antony Gormley.

Will Norman Foster and Anthony Caro cross the Thames in a blaze of glory?
Article Abstract:
The winning design for the 10 million pounds sterling Millennium Bridge across the Thames from St Paul's Cathedral to The Tate at Bankside in London, England, was produced by architect Norman Foster, sculptor Anthony Caro and engineer Chris Wise. The design has generally been warmly received by those who have visited a touring public exhibition. However, some observers believe that the bridge will obscure the view of St Paul's Cathedral from the river. The design has been changed slightly in response to comments from the general public.

Onwards and upwards
Article Abstract:
The Millennium Tower designed by Norman Foster of Foster Associates has been rejected, but there are reasons for seeking to build tall in London, England. Major cities compete with each other over the height of their buildings. The planned tower would have been in use day and night, with mixed usage. This was seen as a positive factor, but one of the new versions would only have one user, a financial institution. Whichever version is chosen will not be as bright a vision as the original plan.
