Pain. Is it all in your head?
Article Abstract:
Research is beginning to indicate that the pain mechanism is extremely complex. It is now clear that pain is not merely an automatic reaction when tissue is damaged. It appears that, at least in certain circumstances, the mind can prevail over pain, with natural pain inhibitors blocking pain signals. Anxiety and stress can increase the perception of pain, while cultural factors can lower it. Doctors are now making extensive use of psychological strategies to help patients deal with pain.

Brain food for babies
Article Abstract:
Research on premature babies at the UK Institute of Child Health has indicated that good nutrition in the early years of life can have a marked impact on mental ability in later life. Premature babies who were fed a nutrient-enriched formula milk were found to have a higher verbal IQ at the age of seven or eight than those who received ordinary formula milk. It is now clear that sub-optimal neonatal nutrition could have a negative impact on cognitive function.
