Pain, with no jokes
Article Abstract:
Television writer Jimmy McGovern has attracted considerable media attention, some of it quite negative, with his new drama, 'Go Now.' This was written in collaboration with multiple sclerosis sufferer Paul Powell, and tells in painful detail what it is like to suffer from multiple sclerosis. The drama has some poignant moments of black humour, and balances elements of a love story against the impact of the disease on relationships. Overall, McGovern has a very positive reputation, and any project with which he is associated is unlikely to be rejected.

Serious about funny business
Article Abstract:
It is not true to say that BBC comedy programmes are not as good as they used to be, according to Geoffrey Perkins, the BBC's head of comedy. People tend to forget that some old comedy programmes were not particularly popular when they were first broadcast, and that they are remembering just a few programmes from a long period of time. He is actively involved in producing programmes, and is looking at ways of satisfying those who like traditional comedy and those seeking something different.

What a fine mess they got us in
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly recognized that Laurel and Hardy should not be regarded in the same light as pre-second world war slapstick comedians. They had a universality which distinguishes their humour from the cruder humour of their contemporaries. Their work shows ordinary people in everyday situations, and does not rely solely on jokes. They have a timeless quality, and their films remain relevant because they deal with power struggles in relationships.
