Party on the edge of a nervous breakdown
Article Abstract:
There is a general feeling of defeat and despair at all levels within the Conservative party, with most people now feeling that it will now be almost impossible to win the next general election. Prime minister John Major's position is very unstable, as even some of his strongest supporters believe that he should be replaced if the party is to have any chance of remaining in government. There is much manoeuvring going on, but nobody is yet certain about the way forward.

Now it's Major vs his party
Article Abstract:
The prospects of the UK Conservative party winning the forthcoming general election seem very bleak following the decision by Prime Minister John Major to call openly for members of the party to unite behind him. There are still a number of senior party members who are publicly disagreeing with him, but he does not feel able to dismiss them. Observers feel that Major has been right to try to show strong leadership, but that he has done so too late.

Life of the party - but not the soul
Article Abstract:
The Conservative party has seen many changes in its regulations over the years, but its primary aim, that of being the party of government, remains unchanged. Conservative MPs considering which candidate to choose in the forthcoming elections for the leadership of the party must now decide whether this is still the party's key objective. They need to consider the dangers of the party losing power, and must make a very tactical choice of candidate.
