Playing host to the homeless and alone
Article Abstract:
Local authorities in Hartlepool, Durham and Gateshead operate schemes for local families to provide a bed for the night for single, homeless people. These homeless are often young but are not considered priority under the 1985 Housing Act. They are not 'down and outs' but have lost their accommodation. Hartlepool has 150-160 flats to let each year, but 3,000 young people on the waiting list. Its scheme, 'Night Stop,' will transfer to voluntary groups. The council also aims to improve the availability of private rented accommodation.

Dropping out: it may be the smartest move
Article Abstract:
Many more students are now dropping out of their courses, and this is creating a large financial burden for both the individuals concerned and the taxpayer. Some are unhappy away from home, while others face financial problems or cannot cope with the studying. They often come to university or college because it was expected of them, rather than because they really wanted to, and later regret not having considered the alternatives.
