Article Abstract:
There is a widespread belief among UK teachers that pupils' behaviour is getting worse. Low-level disruptive behaviour is now very common, and it is also becoming more common for pupils to behave aggressively. Pupils do not like to be told what to do, and may well leave the classroom if the teacher tries to force them to do something. Some behave badly to gain the respect of their peers, while others do it simply because that is how they are allowed to behave at home. Schools which have close links with parents, the local community and local businesses are most likely to be successful in creating a calm working atmosphere.

Mathematics teaching in UK primary schools is placing more emphasis on giving children strategies for dealing with numbers. One of the main aims of the National Numeracy Strategy, which is to be implemented in all UK primary schools from Sep 1999, is to ensure that children become proficient at calculating mentally. Children will be encouraged to develop their mathematical vocabulary and to discuss how they would tackle specific mathematical problems.
