Pollution deaths herald a disaster in the making
Article Abstract:
Three separate environmental problems have combined to create a very serious air pollution problem in south east Asia. Some people have died as a result of the pollution, while many are experiencing breathing difficulties and illness. The pollution was initially caused by the uncontrolled burning of brushwood and forests in Malaysia and Indonesia, made worse by the drought connected with the El Nino weather system. The situation was exacerbated by air pollution from vehicles, power stations and industry. Serious air pollution is now a feature of many towns and cities in developing countries.

The cruel trade that Europe won't ban
Article Abstract:
The European Union has not yet implemented a 1991 directive which was designed to put a stop to the import of furs from animals caught with steel-jawed leghold traps. This is because it fears sparking off a trade war with the US, Canada and Russia, the main exporters of fur. This issue is set to become a point of conflict between the UK, which leghold traps are outlawed, and continental Europe. The UK is hoping to block the approval of a deal negotiated by the European Commission on human trapping standards.
