Professor W. Jackson Bate
Article Abstract:
English scholar Walter Bate was a concentrator in English at Harvard. He was unable to receive a scholarship, so washed dishes to raise money for his tuition. He won several university prizes as a student, and received his BA in 1939 and his PhD in 1942. He was then elected a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows. His doctoral thesis became 'The Stylistic Development of John Keats,' published in 1945. His anthology 'Criticism: The Major Texts,' published in 1952, was kept in print until 1997. He chaired the Harvard English Dept for nine years.

Rachel Gurney

Actress Rachel Gurney was born in Eton, England, in 1920. She made her West End debut in 'The Guinea-Pig' in 1946. She gained Broadway recognition through 'The Dresser' and 'Breaking the Code.' Her most famous television role was in 'Upstairs, Downstairs.'
