Rebels return bodies from siege hospital
Article Abstract:
Chechen rebels who stormed the Russian town of Budennovsk are now known to have taken 627 people hostage, with 73 deaths having also been confirmed. They have been offered money and an escape plane by the Russian authorities, but their leader, Shamil Basayev, is determined that the crisis will only come to an end when Russian forces withdraw from Chechnya. Russian troops are reluctant to storm the hospital where the hostages are being held, as they know that this could cause many deaths.

Trouble for Yeltsin on the home front
Article Abstract:
The Committee of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia is one of the driving forces behind protests against Russian military action in Chechnya. Many people who previously supported president Boris Yeltsin believe that he is mistaken in his efforts to try to impose a military solution in Chechnya. There are particularly strong protests from the mothers of the many unwilling conscripts who have been sent to Chechnya, and some groups are now even giving legal advice to soldiers who have deserted.

Chechens threaten to kill hospital hostages
Article Abstract:
Chechen rebels are holding 500 people hostage in a hospital in the town of Budennovsk, which is actually more than 100 miles away from Chechnya but has suddenly become the front line in the battle between Chechen and Russian forces. More than 70 people were killed as Chechen rebels entered the town, causing considerable shock to local people who considered themselves to be a safe distance away from the conflict. Chechnya is now demanding that Russian troops are withdrawn.
