Reunited with a vengeance
Article Abstract:
The UK government tried to unite the SDLP and Dublin through the ambiguous Anglo-Irish Agreement of Nov 1985. John Major wrote to Kevin McNamara that Northern Ireland remains part of the UK. The Unionist community is desperate as the number of Catholics killed by Protestants in 1992 was more than the number of Protestants killed by Catholics for the first time since the Provisional IRA began fighting in 1970. The Ulster Unionists was called the Anglo-Irish Conservative and Unionist Party from 1886 until 1972. If this title were restored it would give nine safe seats for the Conservatives.

Drifting towards an IRA victory
Article Abstract:
The long-term IRA strategy of causing the British security forces to act until Unionists begin killing soldiers is intended to result in more consideration of withdrawal. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Sir Patrick Mayhew described the IRA as collapsing in 1993 despite the successful huge bombings in Bangor, Portadown, Magherafelt and Newtownards. Unionist MP for Strangford John Taylor said on the same day that the IRA was winning because it has destroyed towns and caused the loss of businesses and jobs.

Why Unionists pose no threat
Article Abstract:
The Ulster Unionist party has threatened to bring about the downfall of the Conservative government if it moves towards the establishment of 'cross-border institutions with executive powers.' However, this is unlikely to happen, as the Unionists could not cause the collapse of the government on this single issue. Cross-border institutions are likely to form part of the Framework for Peace, but will probably not actually come into operation in Northern Ireland.
