Rising market likely to fuel rush for cash
Article Abstract:
The election result means many companies will announce flotations in the summer of 1992. Non-privatisation issues may be billions of pounds higher than the 1.62 billion pounds sterling of 1991. MFI, the Daily Telegraph and Chubb will be seeking a quotation in 1992. Some companies seeking a listing are highly borrowed and some are being listed as part of large international offers. The stock exchange may find it difficult to arrange suitable slots for candidates in a long new-issue queue.

Market forces conspire to put BP under siege
Article Abstract:
British Petroleum (BP) is experiencing difficulties. Plummeting oil prices, a weak dollar and the recession have caused the company's share price to fall and prompted the possibility of a dividend cut. This runs counter to BP's policy of inflation-linked increases in share dividends. Its emphasis on upstream operations was particularly badly hit by the fall in oil prices. BP has begun retrenching. Its nutritions division is for sale and the company may be driven to a rights issue.

In distress but business is booming
Article Abstract:
There is a growing market for insolvent UK companies and high quality corporate debt in 1993. The secondary loan market is becoming more active in the UK. US investors traded the distressed Third World loans of UK companies with sizable US assets. Banks are changing the focus of their business and meeting their capital adequacy ratios. Distressed company debt was considered a low grade investment but could be seen as a risk asset.
