Saddam refuses to back down as war planes hit again
Article Abstract:
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has expressed his determination to stand firm against the US and the UK, which look set to continue their air attacks on Iraq. Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz has indicated that United Nations weapons inspectors will not be permitted to return. The UK and the US claim that the air strikes are achieving their short-term objectives, with Iraq's military capability being negatively affected. However, the US Dept of Defense has acknowledged that the strikes have been only partially successful.

US claims success as Iraq is hit by heavy new wave of air strikes
Article Abstract:
It is believed that at least 25 people have died as a result of US and UK air attacks on Baghdad, Iraq. Air strikes have also been carried out against other targets in Iraq. The decision to go ahead with air strikes has prompted strong criticism of President Bill Clinton in the US, and has also been opposed on the left of the Labour party in the UK. There has been a negative reaction from China and Russia. However, there are no indications that either the UK or the US intend to back down.

Clinton faces his first test on Russia
Article Abstract:
President-elect Bill Clinton has promised to maintain sanctions against South Africa and to support relief operations in Yugoslavia but his major challenge will be the expected economic collapse of Russia. Russia is unlikely to be able to produce International Monetary Fund requirements for aid. He gives priority to the US economy and seeks savings in defence. A problem he inherits is the collapse of talks on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade with Europe.
