There is great tension in Pakistan as the US considers a possible military response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. Neighbouring Afghanistan's Taliban regime has threatened to attack any country that assists the US, and this could lead to a serious border confrontation.

Taliban's last-minute offer fails to halt inevitable

The US government rejected two offers made by Afghanistan's Taliban regime in an attempt to prevent a US military attack. The Taliban ambassador in Pakistan stated that Osama bin Laden could be tried in Afghanistan if the US wished to bring a prosecution, while a Taliban minister offered to release eight foreign aid workers if the US promised not to attack.
