Should ministers set a poverty target?
Article Abstract:
There has been rapid growth in poverty in the UK since 1979. The number of people in poverty in 1995 was 10.3 million, and 25% of children are now living in poverty. The main driving forces behind poverty have been rising unemployment, the growth in the number of single parent families, the expansion of the elderly population and low rates of rises in unskilled wages. Many observers believe that the government's approach to poverty - allowing a much larger segment of the population to become involved in gainful employment - is not sufficient. Some feel that a national poverty target should be linked with the inflation target.

Why the Bank should opt for policy overkill
Article Abstract:
The Bank of England should take care to be extremely cautious with monetary policy, as it is vital that inflation be kept under control. Inflation is still under control at present, but it is becoming increasingly difficult for the Bank of England to judge monetary policy accurately. There are signs that output is already around 1% above trend, and this has the potential to have a very negative impact on inflation. For this reason, it is vital that output growth is brought back to its trend rate of around 2.5%.
