Single mother saves the (celluloid) world
Article Abstract:
Many recent Hollywood films have been reverse rescue fantasy films featuring single mothers as heroines. These single mothers are shown to be brave and strong, and present an acceptable view of feminine vulnerability. The concept of single parent as heroine was first seen in 'Jerry Maguire,' and seems set to be repeated successfully in 'As Good as it Gets.' Positive representations of single parenthood in film contrast sharply with how single parents are portrayed by politicians.

My mother, her lovers, my sister, and me
Article Abstract:
A woman's experiences of growing up with a mother who had many lovers are described. It was hard for a young child to understand her mother's emotions, and it was also difficult to avoid looking upon each lover as a potential father. The lovers who gave expensive gifts were generally most favoured. Lovers who were not favoured are remembered, and the bond which was formed between siblings as a result of this unusual lifestyle is described.
