Sir Sam Curran

Physicist and university administrator Sam Curran studied Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at St John's College, Cambridge, England, where he also gained a PhD. He worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, England, during the second world war, and in 1944 was sent to the Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, CA. He worked at Harwell from 1955 to 1958, and then went to Glasgow, Scotland, to become Principal of the Royal College of Science and Technology after a short time at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment in Aldermaston, England.

Professor Nicholas Kemmer
Article Abstract:
Particle physicist Nicholas Kemmer attended the University of Gottingen, Germany, where he studied with Max Born and Werner Heisenberg. He gained his PhD in Zurich, Switzerland, and in 1936 obtained a Beit Scientific Fellowship at Imperial College, London, England. He became a war worker in Canada during the second world war, and between 1946 and 1953 lectured in mathematics at Cambridge University, England. In 1952 he became Tait Professor of Mathematical Physics at Edinburgh University, Scotland.

Professor J.F. Allen
Article Abstract:
Physicist John Allen was born in 1908. He studied Physics at the University of Manitoba, Canada, and then undertook PhD studies at the University of Toronto, Canada. He held the Chair of Natural Philosophy at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, between 1947 and 1978.
