Article Abstract:
An Irishman recounts his efforts to establish exactly how his older relatives were involved in Irish politics. The era during which his grandmother was an active member of the female wing of the IRA is recalled, and the version of Irish history he was taught at school is discussed. His childhood heroes, including Patrick Pearse, are presented, and the way in which he came to associate being Irish with being Catholic is detailed. The prospects for a lasting peace settlement in Northern Ireland are discussed.

A visit to the parts of Dorset, England, described by Thomas Hardy in his novels is discussed. It is argued that Hardy has particular appeal to the Irish because of his strong love of the countryside.
