It is expected that consumer spending on sports goods in the UK will reach some 3.25 billion pounds sterling in 1997, up 6% from 1996. The trend for sports goods brands, such as Nike and Reebok, to be regarded as part of the youth fashion market is continuing, although there is an active market for the 560 million pounds sterling performance sports goods sector. UK sports retailer leader is Scotland-based Sports Division with group sales expected to reach 350 million pounds sterling in 1997. A detailed analysis of the UK sports goods market is presented.

In 1994, consumer spending on sports goods rose 8% to 2,695 pounds sterling, of which clothing made up 49%, footwear 32%, and equipment 19%. The leisure goods sector is made up of 9,400 outlets, of which 3,500 are sports specialists. The highest earning sports in terms of consumer spending on equipment and clothing are: hiking climbing hunting; golf; running training; aerobics fitness; and football. Details of the structure of the industry is included, along with consumer spending, demographic trends, retailer profiles, and forecasts for the future.

Sports goods sales in the UK in 2000 amounted to an estimated 3.61 billion pounds sterling, up 1.4% from 3.56 billion pounds sterling in 1999. Clothing had a dominant 51% share of consumer spending in 2000, worth 1.85 billion pounds sterling.
