Stepping out with the last of the great defectors
Article Abstract:
It is important for dance companies to try out new works as well as to perform well-established ones, according to dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. This serves to constantly renew their interest and to ensure that they broaden their experience. He is currently working with modern dance company the White Oak Dance Project in Santander, Spain. He has recruited dancers who are able to offer great versatility of style, and the company has created a collaborative atmosphere by uniting the varied backgrounds of its members.

Dancer Irek Mukhamedov acknowledges that all his contemporaries in the Bolshoi have retired, but emphasizes that he has no intention of doing so. He states that he still feels very fit, and has decided that he will only stop performing when he can no longer jump. He is currently rehearsing with Altynai Asylmuratova for a 20-minute duet, 'Bolero,' created by Roland Petit.

Dame Ninette de Valois
Article Abstract:
Dancer, choreographer, teacher, administrator and writer Ninette de Valois was born in Baltiboys, Ireland, in 1898. She was a soloist with Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in the early 1920s, and in 1926 set up a ballet school in London, England, that would later become the Royal Ballet School.
