Still sounding the trumpet
Article Abstract:
Handel's Messiah has been so changed during its 250 year history that what the composer wrote and how he wanted it performed had become indistinct until three scholars produced a version close to the original. They were Jens Peter Larsen, Harold Watkins Shaw and Donald Burrows. Ruth Smith has in addition shown that the librettist of Messiah, Charles Jennens, did not, as previously thought, insist on wording that Handel did not want. Messiah was first performed in Dublin, Ireland on April 13, 1742 but over the years has either been loved or hated by all who hear it.

A lethal cocktail that blows up when stirred
Article Abstract:
On Apr 22 1992 several explosions in the sewers of Guadalajara, Mexico killed 194 people despite complaints of petrol smell from the drains the previous day. Alkane vapour meeting air creates combustion. Shell has researched combustion science in Thornton, Cheshire, England. The simplest alkane is methane but Shell and Sheffied University research shows that methane only explodes in special circumstances known as a 'loop of disaster'. If turbulence can be prevented from mixing air and vapour, explosion can be avoided.

Trumpet blows for technicians of Armageddon
Article Abstract:
The US is reducing its Strategic Air Command (SAC) because of the collapse of the Cold War and internal political pressure to revitalise the economy. Since the 1960's SAC has been reducing its bases and aircraft by about two thirds. Since Sep 29 1991, the 24 hour alert bombers have been called off and the Pentagon is said to have halted the production of new weapons. Although the money saved will help the depressed domestic market, there will be widespread unemployment in former military areas and arms manufacturing.
