Street wars in Italy's wild south
Article Abstract:
Violent crime is beginning to impinge on the lives of ordinary people in Naples, Italy. The city has always had a significant amount of crime, but the overall crime rate has risen dramatically recently. There is particular concern about the fact that disputes between rival gangs are now being settled on the streets, putting the lives of ordinary people at risk. The government has responded by sending 500 soldiers to protect key buildings in the city centre. This will allow the city's police to focus on cracking down on the Camorra, the city's mafia.

Still a player
Article Abstract:
Filmmaker Robert Altman believes that he has been extremely lucky in his career, as he has never had to work on a project that was not of his choosing. He welcomes the fact that he has been able write most of his material and that he has not had to submit to the demands of others. This has been the case with 'Cookie's Fortune,' his most recent film. He does not expect his films to win universal acclaim. Indeed, he feels that he would stop making films if he made one that everybody liked.

New wave of state corruption stuns the Italians
Article Abstract:
Recent investigations have revealed that a small number of public-sector managers in Italy were illegally siphoning off large amounts of state assets through a complex system of bribery and insider trading. This has come as a great shock to ordinary Italians, who had begun to believe that corruption was on the decline. It is now clear that Italy was not successful in ridding itself of corruption following the 'tangentopoli' corruption scandals in 1992.
