Striking a blow for tolerance in Memphis, the city of the Kings
Article Abstract:
Elvis Presley is the main attraction in Memphis Tennessee, although this is also the location where the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, was killed. Elvis Presley brought black music to a white audience and this contributed to integration. He also stirred up controversy in a society where arguments had been avoided, paving the way for cultural and social change in the 1960s and 1970s. Martin Luther King is less celebrated, and there is a clearance sale of souvenirs from the Civil Rights Museum, alongside a display of souvenirs relating to Elvis.
