Strong medicine
Article Abstract:
Screenwriting allows the development of material which is more dense and ambitious than that used in the theatre, according to Tony Marchant, who came to public attention as a playwright at an early age. He now writes only for the screen, and has received strong backing from the BBC. Filming is to start shortly on an eight-part portrait of London, and 'Different for Girls' is scheduled for cinema release in spring 1996. He is keen to reject the widely held view that a screenwriter does not have the same close connections with his or her work that a playwright does.

History: the first casualty of war
Article Abstract:
The Royal National Theatre is shortly to present a dramatisation of Tolstoy's 'War and Peace.' This play, which is four hours long, was undertaken in collaboration with Shared Experience, and was dramatised by Helen Edmundson, who undertook extensive research for the project. The timescale for the dramatisation was much shorter than that for the original novel and for subsequent adaptations, including an opera by Prokofiev.
