Strung up, played out
Article Abstract:
Stress and strain are very common among orchestral musicians, and a considerable number need to use alcohol or beta blockers to steady their nerves. Slow, quiet playing can be mentally and physically exhausting, while very fast bowing can produce repetitive strain injury. In many cases, physical and mental problems are caused by incompetent conductors or inadequate and badly organised rehearsals. Musicians often have to perform in very cramped, uncomfortable positions, and spend a lot of time sitting around.

Snobbery with violins
Article Abstract:
It is common for violinists to make jokes about viola players, while viola players in turn tend to mock violinists. The limited range of music written for the viola is highlighted by violinists, and this makes viola players feel rather defensive. Similarly, viola players mock violinists by stating that the small size of their instrument compared with the viola indicates that they are aspiring to play the viola.
