'Harvesting' water for future growth
Article Abstract:
The Ethiopian government recognizes that irrigation and water conservation are key issues in improving the country's agricultural activity, which accounts for around 45% of gross national product and 85% of employment. Addressing water supply problems would also assist soil conservation, which is another significant issue for Ethiopia. With existing water resources, around 3.5 million ha could be irrigated. At present, only 5% of this is under irrigation.
