Targets, targets, targets!
Article Abstract:
Greenhead Grammar School in Keighley, England, and Netherton Park family centre in Dudley, England, are both working towards the UK government's targets for boosting educational standards. At the former, pupils are now tested in English, maths and science at three different stages, and a projected GCSE or A-level target is set for each pupil in each subject. Making comparisons with similar schools has allowed whole-school targets to be set. At Netherton Park, a wide range of services is provided for pre-school children and their parents and carers.

Public schools, public spirit? Or is it self-interest?
Article Abstract:
The future of relationships between the UK government and private schools remains uncertain. The government has already abolished the assisted places scheme, but will not pursue old ideas of withdrawing charitable status from private schools. Minister for School Standards Stephen Byers is showing considerable interest in how private schools could assist in raising overall educational standards, and some private schools have already expressed willingness to educate gifted pupils at the expense of the state.

A little bit of charity goes a long way
Article Abstract:
The UK government has abolished the assisted places scheme, under which pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds had the opportunity to gain a place at an independent school. However, many independent schools are seeking to continue this policy in various other ways. The 25 schools which belong to the Girls Day School Trust are to invest 70 million pounds sterling in a scheme to protect their 3,000 assisted places, and others are able to offer assisted places through donations from former pupils.
