The Apocalypse has been postponed
Article Abstract:
Japan's Aum Shinri Kyo apocalyptic religious sect has attracted extensive media attention since the gas attack on the Tokyo underground for which it is believed to have been responsible. Many different theories have been circulating about the whereabouts of the sect's leaders and about its motives. It is a very unusual sect, led not by hippies, as had originally been thought, but by some of the country's most intelligent people. It is flourished on the basis of arrogant ambition, and has attracted a large amount of funding.

Apocalypse now
Article Abstract:
The Dayaks of Borneo have been making violent attacks on settlers from the island of Madura since Feb 1999. Local leaders and civil servants cannot control the activities of Dayak warriors, and there have been cases of cannibalism. The Dayak people are very friendly, and it is therefore very hard for outsiders to understand their deep hatred of the Madurese. Journalists who have visited the area are deeply shocked, and know that they will find it very hard to explain what they have seen to the outside world.

Aum: the second coming
Article Abstract:
The Aum Shinro Kyo religious cult, founded in Japan in the 1980s by a guru who calls himself Shoko Asahara, gained a very negative reputation after being associated with a number of murders. Its reputation was further damaged by its poison nerve gas attack on the subway in Tokyo, Japan, in Mar 1995. However, the cult is now attracting more members, and it is purchasing a considerable number of properties in Japan. It is difficult to see why the cult appeals to a growing number of people.
