The news on television presents its viewers with a smaller world
Article Abstract:
Plans by ITN to move 'News at Ten' to the 11pm slot highlight the way in which intelligent coverage of key international issues has been declining in the UK. On both BBC and commercial television, serious current affairs coverage is being sidelined, often being replaced with documentaries focusing on human interest issues. It is now time for television programming to shift away from lifestyle coverage and to give more attention to serious analysis of current affairs.

The BBC's problem is not that it changes too much, but too little
Article Abstract:
Many commentators presume to know a great deal about broadcasting, when in fact their knowledge is nothing more than basic. They criticize changes at the BBC, such as those implemented by James Boyle, head of Radio 4, without really knowing what they are talking about. In fact, the BBC is often unwilling to make changes, and this situation is reinforced by criticism from journalists and politicians who know little or nothing about broadcasting. It is now time to realize that the unique situation of the BBC requires sophisticated analysis, not merely criticism of channel controllers when audience figures fall.
