The Flash that struck the City
Article Abstract:
New UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has surprised many observers by the speed with which he has taken very decisive action. He has benefited from the fact that he has not inherited a crisis, and has come to the job with policies and ideas which are already at an advanced stage of planning. He enjoys the support of Prime Minister Tony Blair, and this is allowing him to take action before bureaucratic barriers emerge. He probably believes that it is best to take as many decisions as possible while the new Labour administration is still popular among the general public.

A Tory leader made in Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
Chris Patten will within a short time lose his position as governor of Hong Kong and will return to the UK, where he looks set to be extremely influential within the Conservative party. He has openly stated that he is keen to return to British politics, going against earlier impressions that he may seek an international appointment. Some observers believe that he could even replace John Major as party leader.
