The anxious children who are too stressed to learn
Article Abstract:
There is growing awareness in the UK of the problem of primary-age children who underperform at school because of conflict at home. Children exposed to conflict at home frequently become anxious, and this impairs their ability to learn. In many cases, they also behave disruptively at school. Children who have lost faith in significant adults in their lives are more likely to be unwilling to trust teachers, and many feel that they do not have control over their lives.

How children's work falls apart when parents split up
Article Abstract:
Children whose parents separate or divorce suffer emotional traumas that are frequently reflected in declining academic performance. A change in children's most important relationships can negatively affect their ability to explore and learn. They often become preoccupied, and find that they cannot concentrate on their school work. Children may feel rejected by their parents, and the damage to their self-esteem may lead to rebellious behaviour.
