The bean-counter's contract
Article Abstract:
Cambridge University has for many generations been associated with extremely high quality architecture. However, it may now be abandoning this commitment, according to the Royal Institute of British Architects. A university review of commissioning policy is looking at design and build construction, a method which allows buildings to be constructed quickly and cheaply. However, the buildings built in this way use standard architectural features, and have nothing to distinguish them from others. Aspiring architects in the UK are very concerned about the possibility of the university switching to design and build.

Those who can, must
Article Abstract:
The most effective teachers are those who are enthusiastic about their work, according to George Sayer, who taught writer and broadcaster Jeremy Paxman. Potential teachers should be made aware that there is great pleasure to be gained from giving young people a love of literature. Ruth Webb, who taught rock singer Skin, believes that the best way to boost teacher recruitment is to offer higher salaries. Raising the status of the teaching profession is also important, according to Eric Anderson, who taught Prime Minister Tony Blair.

We're still in the dark over West's madness
Article Abstract:
The biography of murderer and paedophile Frederick West published recently by Geoffrey Wansell is the latest of a number of book of this kind. It contains graphic detail about West's crimes, and draws on the trial of Rosemary West, who was convicted of 10 murders. It differs from other accounts of criminals' lives in that it was actually commissioned by the Official Solicitor to raise money for West's children. Such an approach seems to show little feeling for the relatives of West's victims.
