The challenge of the Asian tigers: why Britain is looking east for ideas
Article Abstract:
Both Conservative and Labour politicians in the UK are now looking to Asia, rather than the US, for ideas about reforming the economy and the welfare state. The economies of countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore are now serving as models, particularly in terms of their dramatic expansion, their low levels of public spending and their funded welfare. This is a clear sign of a shift in global economic power.

Birth of a new welfare consensus
Article Abstract:
The recently published Dahrendorf report, entitled 'Wealth Creation and Social Cohesion,' attempts to define a new ethos for the welfare state. It is almost the last of a series of free enterprise reports which have been written over the last three years and aim to establish a new approach for the post-Thatcher era. It highlights the best factors from the Thatcher years and attempts to rebuild an inclusive society.
