The crowd that thinks for itself
Article Abstract:
Roger Hartley of the University of Leeds Computer Based Learning Unit developed a program to imitate crowd behaviour in riots and permit police to test control strategies and train officers. There are behaviour patterns for crowds which depend on mood. Mr Hartley devised a program recreating a crowd with unpredictable behaviour which acted convincingly. Simulated groups of about 20 consider changing their tactics according to pre-set probabilities every 15 seconds.

The gigaflop that thinks its a teraflop
Article Abstract:
Meiko was founded in 1985 to make supercomputers which combined hundreds of transputer chips to increase power cheaply in a design known as 'parallel computers.' The second generation Meiko machine uses the SPARC microprocessor, which can be combined with small arithmetic processors made by Fujitsu and with Meiko chips. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, San Francisco, intends to buy a Meiko supercomputer rather than a more traditional design.

Labour thinks small to make a big impact
Article Abstract:
A key policy of the UK Labour party is the decentralisation of power. This will allow local communities to be regenerated, and is part of a programme for the creation of a stakeholder society in the UK. Against this background, the Labour party welcomes the report produced recently by the independent Regional Policy Commission, which emphasises that building on the UK's regions could be a way of creating employment and improving social justice.
