The darling buds of December
Article Abstract:
Poinsettias have become one of the most popular plants to give as a Christmas present in the UK. These plants naturally shed their leaves by Feb, but they can be encouraged to flower again. They should be cut back hard when they have finished flowering and allowed to dry out for three to four weeks. When watering is recommenced, new shoots should sprout. These must be pulled off, along with a heel of the old wood, and the old plant thrown away. The cuttings are then rooted in pots of compost mixed with sand. The plants must be covered with a black polythene bag for 12 hours every evening from around Sep.

When small is beautiful
Article Abstract:
Those who grow bonsai trees are seeking to distil the essence of some element of the natural world. It is easier to obtain a good bonsai from a relatively large tree cut down to size than to grow one from a small seedling. The bonsai style is well suited to the trident maples, Acer buergerianum, which have small, delicate leaves and produce an attractive colour in autumn. Other trees often grown as bonsais include the Japanese white pine, Pinus pentaphylla, and the evergreen Chinese juniper, Juniperus chinensis.

There's a fig tree in sunless Bridewell
Article Abstract:
The Museum of London, England, is staging an exhibition largely based on Todd Longstaffe-Gowan's book 'The London Town Garden 1740-1840.' It is clear that urban gardeners in the past faced very similar problems to those of their modern-day counterparts.
